Caroline Weber, associate professor of French at Barnard College, subtitles her lecture “A Short History of Fashion from Top to Toe.” Anne Lemanski’s sculptural work A Century of Hair 1900–1990 inspires a lively historical overview of extremities in fashion, with “extremities” understood anatomically—hair, feet, hands—and as hips, shoulders, and breasts. Images from ancient Etruria, Renaissance Venice, swinging London, and contemporary clothing industries illuminate Weber’s talk. Lemanski’s work is featured in the Museum exhibition 0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art, opening March 24.
A reception and book signing follow the lecture.
