Lecture: Sinful or Saved? What Medieval People Did to Get to Heaven

Thursday, March 7 | 7 pm

Katharine Brophy Dubois, Visiting Assistant Professor, Departments of History and Religion, Duke University

Like modern evangelists, preachers of the Middle Ages constantly exhorted the members of their flocks to seek their eternal salvation. From prayer to abstinence to doing good works, a Christian could practice devotions at home or at church, locally or in distant lands. But the road to salvation was far from smooth; everyday life offered countless opportunities for sin. Dangers to the soul lurked around every corner. How did ordinary people negotiate the treacherous journey of Christian life, and what rituals and heavenly mentors did they depend upon to escape sin, or to wash their souls clean when they inevitably succumbed?
