Artist's Talk: Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Antimonuments and Subsculptures

Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer will present his interactive installations that intersect architecture and performance art. Using technologies such as robotics and computerized surveillance, Lozano-Hemmer manipulates, often with the help of viewers, synchronized light and shadow to create large kinetic displays.
In 2007 Lozano-Hemmer was the first artist to officially represent Mexico at the Venice Biennale. He has exhibited at 10 other Biennials, and his public art has been commissioned for events including the U.N. World Summit of Cities in Lyon and the Expansion of the European Union in Dublin. His piece This Year’s Midnight (Shadow Box 5), recently acquired by the NCMA, is featured in 0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art, on view through August 11.
