VertigoFriday, August 23 | 8:30 pm
(1958) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. James Stewart, Kim Novak, Barbara Bel Geddes. (128 min).
This is ostensibly a twisty mystery about a detective with a fear of heights, but its true subject is the hero’s pathological obsession with a dead woman. Recently elevated to the position of greatest film of all time in the prestigious Sight and Sound poll (displacing perennial favorite Citizen Kane), Vertigo has an inherent creepiness that deepens with each successive viewing. Novak’s erotic stillness allows both Scottie and the movie audience to read her face according to one’s own desires.
