Printmaking is a vital tradition in Chicano and Latino art, with radical roots in the Chicano movement and Latin America. This lecture traces that history and examines the foremost printmakers and major artistic themes in the exhibition. With specific considerations of prints and politics, memory and identity, visual bilingualism, and the relationship of Chicano art and postmodernism, Professor Black outlines the uneasy relationship of Chicano art with mainstream artistic institutions—museums, art history, and art criticism.
