Birds Fly Home—For a Rare Visit with Members

Lower-Level Gallery

In late 2002 the Museum began its “Save a Bird” campaign, a fund-raising effort to restore the gorgeous volumes of John James Audubon’s The Birds of America. Completely conserved, these bound volumes are shown together at the NCMA for the first time in several years. Come see all four beautiful volumes on one special day that’s strictly “for the birds.” This free event is for members only.

This fall we'll visit the private home of Marianne and Allen Mebane, located in a rural setting amid beautiful gardens, a natural lake, and an outstanding stainless steel, contemporary outdoor sculpture by Roxy Paine. We'll view large world class paintings on every wall of a designer home and enjoy lunch at Zevely House, followed by a tour of paintings and sculpture at Reynolda House in Winston-Salem. Contact Vicky Huband for details: (919) 807-7922

Chicago, Ill.
Thursday–Sunday, November 6–9

Chicago is a city full of fabulous architecture and outdoor contemporary sculpture. In Millennium Park, we visit Jaume Plensa’s playful Crown Fountain (2004), which projects video images of Chicagoans pursing their lips to allow water to flow into a reflecting pool, reminiscent of ancient gargoyles. The very popular Cloud Gate (2004), affectionately known as “the Bean,” is a delightful work by Anish Kapoor, and next door is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion designed by Frank Gehry. We take architectural tours of Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe homes, and we attend the opening of the exciting SOFA (Sculptural Objects and Functional Art) exhibition, presenting masterworks of design and fine art from international galleries. Visits to several contemporary glass galleries are also on the itinerary. Contact Vicky Huband for details: (919) 807-7922
