General Museum Story Ideas

The Director When Larry Wheeler was named "2000 Tar Heel of the Year" by The News & Observer, he was described as "the godfather of the Triangle's cultural boom." Maybe it was the way he pulled together a blockbuster Rodin exhibition that set all-time attendance records at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Maybe it was the way he deftly returned one of the Museum's prized paintings after the NCMA learned it had been confiscated by Nazis (in appreciation, the heirs sold the painting back to the Museum at half of its appraised value). But probably it's because he continually strives to achieve more, and he pushes until he gets what he wants. Now he has a bold vision for an entirely new art museum complex, developed on a 164-acre campus that will feature bike trails, art installations, walking paths, trails and the existing Museum's outdoor amphitheater. An architecturally dynamic connection with views to the Park will link the Museum to the current facility. The existing building will be renovated to become an active public environment for interactive education, creating a dynamic international art destination.

Looted Art More than 50 years after the end of World War II, the whereabouts of countless works of art looted or lost by the Nazis has become a major international controversy. The North Carolina Museum of Art is the first American museum to return a work of art seized during the Holocaust era without litigation. The Museum's action last year prompted the heirs to return the painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Madonna and Child in a Landscape, as a partial gift/purchase. Interview option: director or curator.
