Langston's poetry selection:

Neon Aliens Ate My Homework by Nick Cannon

I read Neon Aliens Ate My Homework because this poem is amazing, and I love the author. I really enjoyed how his mother took the time to understand and listen to him while being encouraging.

Victoria's selections:

My Cold Plum Lemon Pie Bluesy Mood by Tameka Fryer Brown

What color is your mood? During this selection we will explore the colors of our moods. I will share my mood colors and hope to hear your mood colors as well!

On a really good day, Jamie feels purple like the first bite of a juicy cold plum. And with a crayon in his hand, Jamie eases into a green feeling, like a dragon dancing through a jungle made of green Jell-O. But when his brothers push him around and make fun of his drawings, Jamie feels like a dark gray storm brewing.

What will it take to put Jamie back in a bright-feeling mood?

Through Jamie, young readers learn to describe how they’re feeling in a unique way.

Tameka Fryer Brown is an award-winning author living in North Carolina. She is also the recipient of our inaugural Getaway Writers Program, which is designed to provide writers with opportunities for rest while working toward literary projects, to encourage the imagination of young readers, and to promote the work of Black writers and illustrators while amplifying the contributions to our community and culture.

I Promise by Lebron James

During this selection we will explore how the most important promise you can make is to yourself. Are you holding fast to your hopes, your dreams? What inspires you to move forward?

I Promise is a lively and inspiring picture book that reminds us that tomorrow’s success starts with the promises we make to ourselves and our community today.

With Lebron James’s upbeat, rhyming text and vibrant illustrations perfectly crafted for a diverse audience by New York Times best-selling artist Nina Mata, this book has the power to inspire all children and families to be their best.
