The third Friday of each month, tune in for stories from the beautiful NCMA galleries. Victoria Scott-Miller of Liberation Station bookstore offers a series of readings and book recommendations for young people and their families, using art and literature to build bridges. These recorded videos will be added to the event page at 9 am and will remain accessible on the NCMA YouTube channel.

Scott-Miller says, “Our Dreaming in Color series was created to represent and celebrate the vastness of Black culture and innovation while highlighting narratives such as joy, community, tradition, and leadership. Our selections unearth identifiable childhood experiences as a connecting point to explore with the authors, illustrators, and children who hold us accountable to share these stories . . . Dreaming in Color teaches us how to exist everywhere, how to take up as much room as possible; boldly and unapologetically.”

Langston's poetry selection:

Thanks a Million by Nikki Grimes, illustrated by Cozbi A. Cabrera

I read “Reward” because I think it is important to express gratitude. There are so many ways to express gratitude, by saying thank you or appreciate you. It is an act we can practice every day!

Victoria's selections:

Superheroes Are Everywhere by Kamala Harris, illustrated by Mechal Renee Roe

From Sen. Kamala Harris comes a picture book with an empowering message: Superheroes are all around us, and if we try, we can all be heroes, too.

Before Harris became a district attorney and a U.S. senator, she was a little girl who loved superheroes. And when she looked around, she was amazed to find them everywhere! In her family, among her friends, even down the street. And those superheroes showed her that all you need to do to be a superhero is to be the best that you can be.

In this empowering and joyful picture book that speaks directly to kids, Harris takes readers through her life and shows them that the power to make the world a better place is inside all of us. And with engaging art by Mechal Renee Roe, as well as a guide to being a superhero at the end, this book is sure to have kids taking up the superhero mantle (cape and mask optional).

Cameron Goes to School by Sheletta Brundidge, illustrated by Lily Coyle

Cameron will soon be starting kindergarten, and her whole family is nervous. How will they manage without her when she goes off to school? This sweet and funny story starring a young African American girl with autism will help all kids—and their families—face the great big, wonderful change that is school.
