Join us for a special session of the NCMA Film Club featuring a virtual live-stream screening of the silent classic Steamboat Bill Jr. with an introduction by film curator Laura Boyes and live music by pianist and composer David Drazin. A 20-minute Q&A/discussion follows the film screening.
Steamboat Bill Jr.
(1928) Directed by Charles Reisner and Buster Keaton. 70 min.
Rough-and-tumble Steamboat Bill is mightily disappointed in Jr., his namby-pamby son and heir returning home from college with a ukulele, pencil-line mustache, and beret. Luckily, appearances can be deceiving; Jr. is forced to tussle with the schemes of a rival riverboat captain and a furious storm. Referencing gags from vaudeville and beautifully filmed by the Sacramento River, this film is comic perfection, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Steamboat Bill Jr. displays more inspired energy and inventiveness than pretty much everything else currently in cinemas combined” (London Times).
How it works
The introduction, live stream of the film, and discussion all take place via Zoom and will be streamed live on the NCMA YouTube page.
At 9 am on the day of the event and one hour before the event, you will receive an email with the Zoom and YouTube links to watch the live stream. You can join either through Zoom or YouTube.
If you would like to watch on a bigger screen, you can connect your laptop to the TV using an HDMI cable, or you can cast the video using Chromecast, Apple TV, or Roku. Instructions on how to do that are here.
For questions regarding registration or logistics for the event, email Maria Lopez, manager of film and lecture programs.
If you enjoy talking about films, join us at 7 pm on the third Friday of the month for our free virtual NCMA Film Club! Watch a selected film at your convenience and then join a discussion with a special guest.
