Join writer-scholar Jameela F. Dallis to make language art! Or, rather, to write ekphrastic poems inspired by the Museum’s collection. Ekphrasis means “description” in Greek, and ekphrastic poems are often vivid descriptions of works of art. Through grounding exercises, guided reflections, and writing prompts, participants respond to specific works of art around a central theme, encountering art, language, everyday objects, and ourselves in unexpected ways.

Discussion and sharing are encouraged. For ages 16 and up.

About the facilitator

Durham-based writer and scholar Jameela F. Dallis has taught first-year writing and several literature courses at UNC–Chapel Hill, UNC–Greensboro, and Elon University. She holds a PhD in English from UNC–CH. Her work has appeared in IndyWeek and Decoded: A Duke Performances Journal.

How to prepare for this program

  • Have a journal/notebook and writing implement nearby, and come with an open mind.
  • Choose a quiet space with minimal distractions. Feel free to create as comfortable an area as you like: Sit in a supportive chair, dim the lights, or light a candle.
  • While you can use a smartphone to join, for an optimal experience we recommend using a desktop, laptop, or tablet.
  • Log on a few minutes early to get familiar with the view options, chat box, and other functions.
   • Use headphones and microphone for best sound quality, and silence alerts from nearby devices.

For questions on the content of this program, email Bryanne Senor.
