If you enjoy watching and talking about films, join us for a meeting of the virtual NCMA Film Club! Watch the film at your convenience, and then join a Zoom discussion. This month’s selection is the Mexican documentary film Takeda, about Japanese painter Shinzaburo Takeda. Our special guest moderator for the discussion is Alex Piñeres, co-founder of the Cine Casual Film Series.  The Cine Casual Film Series, founded by Giovanna Torres and Alex Piñeres, is a recent initiative screening award-winning Latin American films in Charlotte, N.C. They are the team behind cinecasual.com, an outlet dedicated to Ibero-American cinema, started in 2016.

Takeda

(2017) Directed by Yaasib Vázquez Colmenares. 95 min. Mexico. NR.
Takeda is a film about the universality of human existence seen through the eyes of a Japanese painter who has adopted Mexican culture. Shinzaburo Takeda’s mission is to rescue the identity, honor, and tradition of ancient Japan through the Mexican muralist movement. On this journey he became enveloped in Mexico and its traditions, which evoke his past.
Takeda leads us through Mexico to connect with the nostalgia of a world full of rituals nearly extinct. Shinzaburo Takeda teaches us much more than technique; he teaches us to reconcile and discover the language of art to express and reflect upon our human condition.

How to watch the film

The private link to watch the film will be included in the registration confirmation email along with the Zoom link to join the discussion. If you would like to watch the film on a bigger screen, you can connect your laptop to the TV using an HDMI cable, or you can cast the video using Chromecast, Apple TV, or Roku. Instructions on how to do that are here.
